What ate my cable?

My USB charging cable has only ever moved from my bag to the charger and back in the past couple of days.

I’m usually alert and would have noticed this the last time I plugged it into the charger. But here it is, my cable insulation is “broken” all the way around but with a big gouge mark on one end.

Either someone tried to cut my cable, or something tried to chew on it. Are there any other explanations for how you could get a gouge on one end then a clean break all the way around? It’s not like I folded my wire at that place either to cause the break.
