Took a quick trip out to the nearby fort to see what the Loy Krathong festival was all about. It was a pretty happening and fun atmosphere.

Even around 10pm, the vendors were still trying to make the flower baskets.

I heard that in previous years, a boat took people to the middle of the Chao Praya river to release their Krathongs. This year however people had to be content with the incense flower baskets float downstream by the river bank.

Before releasing their Krathongs, people made a wish or said a prayer.

I spoke to a local Thai who said that people during this festival, people give thanks to the river which sustains them and also to ask the river to wash away their bad fortune.

This festival also coincides with the Northern Thai festival of Yi Peng, where they release Khom Loi, or sky lanterns.

Unfortunately despite the threat of a death penalty for releasing the aerial version of the floating lanterns, parts of Thailand ended up in flames
